Guilds are groups of people who share common goals, interests, and have at least some sort of chain of authority. Some of those guilds are only loose organisations with few rules and were born out of necessity, others are powerful political factions with strict laws and dominant leaders.

So far there exist four different kind of guilds: Occupational, Layman, Crafts and Race guilds. The most powerful, but also most restrictive guilds are the occupational ones. They have strict rules and hierarchies. Layman guilds also apply certain restriction to their members, but tend to accept a broader spectrum of people. Crafts guilds are normally open to anyone who wants to join and shows an interest in mastering the craft that the guild specializes in. Race guilds are, as the name already implies, only open to members of certain races.

It is not necessary for a character to join any guild to survive in the world of Geas, but it surely can help. The tradeoff for the help and power of a guild membership however, is restricted freedom and certain duties and responsibilities. Therefore one has to choose carefully between security and power or freedom and independence. Especially since once you become a member of a guild, there is no easy way to leave, for the guild might consider you a traitor and hunt you down.
